Project / Thesis Summary

Research Topic in M.Tech. :
Augmentation of Heat Transfer using in-line propellers (Experimental work). (1 Paper Published)

Research Field in Ph.D. :
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). (3 Papers Published, 1 communicated)

Research Topic in Ph.D. :
Study of Non Reflecting Boundary Conditions ( NRBC ). The Ph.D. project consists of formulating, analyzing and applying Non Reflecting Boundary Conditions to achieve small size of the spatial domain in which we want to solve governing partial differential equations for a wave field numerically. The equations considered are compressible Navier Stokes equations and linearized wave equation.

Publications Summary :
        4 Papers published, 1 communicated.

Experience Summary

In reverse chronological order:

    1. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Mumbai, India: As Assistant Consultant, from March 1998 onwards.  Involved in a variety of activities, viz.: (1)Software engineering (2)Oracle Applications training at TCS Corporate Training Center at Malad, Bombay, (3)an Information System and Technology Plan (ISTP) study for the Bilakhia group of companies, India, (4)on-site at Cummins Oil Engines, Inc., Columbus, Indiana, USA, devising structures and procedures for production support of Oracle Applications modules implemented at their Southern Indiana plants. I was also involved in sitting on interview panels for recruitment of experienced as well as fresh candidates for TCS.
    2. Computervision (CV) Research and Development India (Pvt.) Ltd., Pune (India), the R&D excellence center of Computervision Corporation, Bedford, USA, in the capacity of Senior (Software) Engineer with the CAM group, from August 1996 to March 1998. CV and Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) merged in December 1997 to form the sixth largest independent software company in the world, and CV now functions as a wholly owned subsidiary of PTC. Responsibilities included timely completion of software projects for NC machining and handling various software issues as and when they arose. CADDS5 and CVNC are well established CAD and CAM packages for the high end CAD/CAM market in the world. The software design, development and maintenance projects I did for CV/PTC on these packages required the use of software tools like OMTool for Object oriented analysis and design, Discover, Purify, debuggers (Workshop on Sun/Solaris), Version Control tools. Coding was undertaken in C, C++, Fortran, and company specific languages like NCGRAM. The platform used was Unix on Sun and SGI machines. Responsibilities also included training new joinees as well as the documentation group on basics of CAM.

    3. Gas Authority of India Ltd., Baroda and Dibiyapur (India): Work on the construction site of UP Petrochemicals Complex, the gas cracker plant of GAIL. GAIL is the Public sector Company that handles natural gas distribution in India. The construction project mentioned above was being handled for GAIL by Engineers India Limited, and GAIL personnel worked in supervisory capacity. (May to December, 1991)

    4. Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (India): Setting up of experimental project later converted to M.Tech. Thesis. This experiment investigated heat transfer augmentation in cross flow heat exchangers by the means of in-line propellers placed in the flow. No external supply of energy was provided for these propellers. The flow caused them to rotate, thereby creating swirl and causing better heat transfer. Other researchers later continued the work with fluids other than water that had been used by me. I was employed as a Senior Research Associate in this project in late 1988 and early 1989, later I converted this work into my Master of Technology thesis.

    5. Kinetic Technologies India, Delhi (India): (May to November 1988 as Design Engineer). The main responsibility was design of process equipment. The design involved use of codes like ASME, TEMA and Indian standards. I developed some software to automate the calculations being done there manually. One problem I worked on also required vibration analysis of a heat exchanger. Also Trained draftsmen in use of a drafting package (Cascade). Hence I helped moving the company from manually generated drawings to computerized ones.

    6. I have undertaken small private ventures, viz., training of students/draftsmen on CAD packages like AutoCAD, and training of representatives of Machbow Pumps (Pvt. Ltd.), Suyog Industrial Estate, Vikhroli, Mumbai, India, in design of small centrifugal pumps.

Teaching Experience :

        1. Lab classes and answer-sheet correction of undergraduate students as Teaching Assistant during M. Tech. and Ph. D at IIT, Kanpur and IIT, Bombay.

        2. Conducted training as part of the job responsibilities for TCS (please see item no. 1 above).

        3. Conducted training as part of the job responsibilities for Computervision  (please see item no. 2 above).

        4. Conducted training as part of the job responsibilities for KTI (please see item no. 5 above).

        5. Taught software packages and design of centrifugal pumps as a personal enterprise (please see item no. 6 above).
